What it is
A guided climb up Cerro Tortuguero — at 119 metres, the only real elevation in this flat canal-and-jungle landscape, and an extinct volcano, one of the few on this side of Costa Rica. From the summit the view opens to the canals on one side and the Caribbean on the other. Along the trail your guide points out the flora and fauna of Tortuguero.
Good to know
- There are a lot of steps — come with reasonable fitness, and bring a water bottle.
- Runs morning or afternoon (two start times) — about 2 hours.
- The hike requires the Tortuguero National Park entrance, cerro sector (buy at serviciosenlinea.sinac.go.cr) — not included in the tour cost.
- You usually enter from the park’s main entrance and come out at the bocana, where a local vendor sometimes sells pipas (fresh coconut water) — bring a little cash so you don’t miss the most refreshing thing after a climb like this.
